President Droupadi Murmu launches INS Vindhyagiri: 5 Fact Know about it

President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Kolkata today, where she inaugurated a new national naval base for the Indian Navy. The ship was received by President Droupadi Murmu at the dock on the banks of the Hooghly River.

President Droupadi Murmu was received at the airport by West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose.A new warship named Vindhyagiri will be launched at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSSE) facility on the banks of the Hooghly River.

 It is the sixth of the seven warships included in ‘Project 17 Alpha’ aimed at strengthening the Navy’s fleet. The first five ships of the project were introduced between 2019 and 2022, notably “Vindhyagiri” assumes special significance as it is the third and last stealth frigate built by the Kolkata-based shipbuilder for the Navy under the project.

 An official pointed out that around 75% of orders have come from domestic defense firms, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), especially equipment and systems for the P17A ships.The missile named P17A will be Cigarettes, whose length has been kept at 149 meters, if we talk about its weight, then its weight will be 6670 tonnes and its maximum speed can be 28 knots. Importantly, they are built to deal with air, surface and sub-surface threats.

The warship is named Vindhyagiri, in honor of a mountain range in Karnataka. The Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau designed it in ash, black and red colors similar to their own P17A stealth frigates.The Navy informed that the ship with the latest technology ‘Vindhyagiri’ pays tribute to its predecessor, the Leander class ASW frigate INS Vindhyagiri, which served the nation for 31 years till June 2012.

The P17A program involves two entities: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSSE) Limited and Mazagon Docks Shipbuilders (MDAL) Limited. In total, three GRSE and four MDL ships are under various stages of construction for the Indian Navy.
